Finding and Eating Black Chicken in Hanoi, Vietnam

Said to heal a lot of ailments ranging from the simple cold, nagging headaches and up to enhancing lactation of breastfeeding mothers, black chicken is the Asian equivalent of chicken soup and more.

Contrary to the appalling look of the meal deprived of vivid colors, with the dark brown chicken flesh stuffed with herbs and submerged in an equally dark liquid, this gamey soup comes from a striking bird with white wispy feathers and almost bluish flesh.

Although this soup is not only found in Vietnam, wouldn’t you want to try this?

If you feel a bit squemish regarding streetfood, this might not be for you. In my opinion, though, Vietnam’s soul is in its street food and local people. Only a potion of Vietnam speaks English but you cannot escape the friendly and “everyone knows everyone” vibe in the streets even as a foreigner. Besides, Vietnamese food is all over the world now so, in my opinion, eating it in restaurants may not feel different than any place else.

If you find yourself in Hanoi, one spot is just across here!

And this mister is in charge!

Manage your expectations. His spot is like a hole in the wall but mind you, the black chicken here tastes delicious, with strong hint of herbs. If you’re watching out for your sodium intake, you might not have to worry because they serve the salt to taste.

Have you been to this mister’s spot before? Do you know of any other spots? We’d appreciate your thoughts and comments below!
